Team Psycho OMRRA Endurance Race
May 18, 2002

Summary

Endurance Team

Our endurance team, Team Psycho, is:

We ride Dan Baisch's 1992 CBR600F2. We had local actor Bud Reese and Les' friend Dave to help out with pit stops, and my wife Julie and Dan's girlfriend Andrea to help with scoring.

Endurance Race

Dan rode the first 1/2 hour shift. I got on and made 3/4 of a lap before the first red flag of the race came out. We stopped racing for a little over 5 minutes while someone got a ride in the ambulance.

A couple laps after the re-start, I ended up behind a Kawasaki that I was having a hard time passing. Scott Avery gave me a little "schooling" -- coming back around me in between 1 and 2 after I passed him on the straight. But Scott couldn't get around the green bike, either. Soon Kevin "Goat Boy" Burgess came around me, and he and Scott began dicing with each other and trying hard to get around the Kawasaki. This went on for a couple of laps, and finally the K bike rider made a mistake in turn 3. All three of us got around him then.

By this time I was starting to get used to Dan's bike again, and I soon used the CBR's motor to put Scott and Kevin behind me. My lap times came down (I found out later), but I was having a hard time in a few corners. I was carrying too much speed through turn 2, or just not leaning it over enough, and kept exiting 2 really wide. This leaves you with a very tight entrance to 3. I was still working on things when I was waved in.

Martin went out, but quickly had to come back in for another red flag. That incident was cleared fairly quickly and Martin got to start the bike from the grid.

Les went out for a shift, then Dan. Dan's session was coming to an end when another red flag came out. This time the track was closed for oil cleanup for nearly half an hour.

I got to go again for another 20 minutes. This time I felt much smoother and better on the bike. Unfortunately, my lap times stayed the same as they were toward the last half of the first session.

Then Les and Dan each took 20 minute shifts, while Martin gracefully declined. No more red flags, and we ended the race in 8th place in the Middleweight class.

The good news is that the bike held up great and we had no problems to solve. The front suspension is a little soft, but Dan is hoping to remedy that before the next endurance race.

Thanks

Thanks to all the OMRRA turn workers, registration folks, and other volunteers who make OMRRA race days possible. The turn workers deserve a "golden broom" award for the May weekend, as there were serious oil incidents both days, which had all of them out with the grease sweep.

Thanks to Gene Brown at Dr. Browns for the tire warmer loan.
